Power

Balance in Power

Power is an interesting concept. People have killed millions of other souls to attain more power. The power to control others land, money, oil, and other resources…even rape is not about sex but about having power over another. As a society we are obsessed with power.

“Power is always dangerous. Power attracts the worst and corrupts the best.”

-Edward Abbey

Power
is both desired as well as feared. Can it be put to a greater use and in turn help humanity? Of course, even the self-help industry is focused on power but the difference is the power to rule nations and domination of resources vs. the power to live a truly authentic life with strength and love.
The one most important concepts I have learned related to power is locus of control.

Locus of control is a theory in personality psychology referring to the extent to which individuals believe that they can control events that affect them. Understanding of personality psychology concept was developed by Julian B. Rotter in 1954, and has since become an aspect of personality studies. A person's locus (Latin for "place" or "location") can be either internal (meaning the person believes that they control their life) or external (meaning they believe that their environment, some higher power or other people control their decisions and their life). -British Journal of Psychology

An expression of personality in one of the extremes is not a matter of good vs. bad. People who have a strong self-determination tend to have an internal LOC. Those who believe strongly in a higher power tend to have an external LOC. Neither of these positions are wrong and they are not mutually exclusive. It is in co-creating between individual and the divine that we reach are greatest potential. The negative side of external is a victim mentality and the negative side of internal is domination to achieve your own goals at the expense of others. I believe by finding the middle ground where you see and use your talents and gifts to reach your goals.  At the same time it is important to ask for guidance and help when necessary, we can truly uncover and live at our highest potential.

Why are we masters of our fate, the captains of our souls—because we have the power to control our thoughts and our attitudes. That is why many people live in the withering negative world. That is why many people live in the positive faith world.
-Alfred Mont pert.

Whether you have an internal or external LOC, the most important question is how are you making your choices? Is the belief of society, your family, friends, making decisions for you? Are your decisions being made from an Id point of view? Are you ignoring the impact on others? How are you using your power? Are you improving the world and yourself or are you detracting from it?
