The Lessons That Follow
Often times in confrontations, whether it is with friends or loved ones, we can be left feeling angry, hurt, upset, sad and sometimes have that thought run through our heads, “I will never forgive you.” Many times when that is the end result, we’ll end up missing out on something key that is great; a wonderful person in our lives or the lesson that comes with letting go of the feelings that went with that experience. I am not an expert, just a person who’s had life lessons and felt compelled to share...perhaps they will help someone out there.
I live and learn continually-this has been the positive to some of my most negative experiences. Sometimes when we forgive, ourselves or others, we look internally and see how we aided in that confrontation and from that self-reflection we can see ways to make positive change, opening up possibilities.
There have been friends that I have lost that I wish I would have kept, moments and decisions I wish I could have done differently, but would I take them back? No.
The times I’ve felt the most heightened emotions, regardless of what they are, I learn the most meaningful lessons.
Someone in my life who’s words I take to heart quoted Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.. Holmes was an American jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from 1902 to 1932:
“[A person’s] mind, stretched by a new idea, never goes back to its original dimensions.”
Some could look at this negatively, freaking out and over analyze their life and all the bumps along the way, looking down on themselves or others.
There have been moments before where I have had those very reactions. I try to look at everything in this life and see the positives though. If that new idea is an aspect of me that is unsavory, I ask myself why they see that and could there be merit to the madness? Change when you think it is necessary and when it best serves you, along with others. And when in doubt look to forgiveness if not for them, than for yourself.
