A Woman’s Worth
The fight for women’s rights seems to be the war of the ages. For thousands of years women have been seen as second class citizens—unequal, feeble, emotional creatures, incapable of leadership roles. Those roles were seen fit only for men with a woman’s place at his side. What of Joan of Arc, Elizabeth the Virgin Queen, or even Helen Keller? Their stories are that of valor and bravery but even when looking at Keller, her true history as an activist was stripped from our text books. All we hear is how she was a deaf and blind woman who fought the odds so she could read, write, and conquer the spoken word. Few get the inside story of her other accomplishments: her bachelor’s degree, her outspoken campaigns for women’s suffrage, worker’s rights, political movements, or opposition to war. That wasn't very “ladylike” and couldn’t be shared.
While today there are women taking on leadership roles, becoming movers and shakers, and paving the for the rest of us to come up and take on the world, there is a lot more that needs to be done—equal wages, stripping away female stereotypes, creating opportunities for female management roles, and the list goes on. The fight is not just a woman’s fight. It is a man’s as well. Men are an integral part of the movement towards equity and equality for women. What can be done to make such movements so?
First there must be the knowledge that men and women are different (like Venus and Mars or the moon and the sun), but in realizing these differences there should also be the acknowledgement of the strength in those unique traits that separate us. The only way for success to be possible and for this gender war to finally end is to utilize and focus on what makes each gender shine—in our case recognizing a woman’s worth. Women are unique, amazing and beautiful. There is nothing feeble about the strength of a woman—nothing that says she is incapable. We, as women, need only the opportunity and the belief in our capabilities and the sky will no longer be the limit. Shoot for the stars ladies. I’m looking forward to watching you shine!
